RedBall

April 17-22 | Throughout Bethlehem
RedBall is a traveling public art piece by American artist Kurt Perschke. Considered “the world’s longest-running street art work” the piece has been to more than 25 cities globally and moves through a city with a new site each day of the performance. Kurt and his team squeeze RedBall between buildings and hoist it above bridges, drawing attention to sometimes overlooked spaces that have architectural and historical significance. Plus, it’s a great photo op! Experience the City of Bethlehem as you never have before with this unique and powerful public art project.

International Day of Sculpture: April 28
A multi-faceted larger-than-life sculpture of Einstein that explores James West’s interpretation of the Theory of Relativity and the push and pull he experienced when stepping outside of his comfort zone to challenge common sense and knowledge.

This year, ArtsQuest is also partnering with Lehigh Valley Underground to offer five free performances each night at other SouthSide venues such as Color Me Mine, Domaci, Molly’s Irish Grille & Sports Pub and Sotto Santi, pushing the total number of musical acts at the festival to more than 30 in all.

SouthSide Collaborative Community Animation Blast
with MaGiK Animation Studios

Animate your world! Be a part of telling the story of the SouthSide Bethlehem Community and helping to imagine the future. Attendees to the SouthSide Arts & Music Festival will have an opportunity to participate and create a short, collaborative community animated film led by animation director Maciek Albrecht from MaGiK Animation Studio, our featured Artist for the 2018 Artist Among Us Series. The final community animation project will be featured during Animation Day on April 29 at the Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas at SteelStacks.

Each year during the festival ArtsQuest will unveil another vibrant community mural designed by local artists in the SouthSide Arts District. The project is intended to inspire civic pride, encourage community engagement and diminish blight by creating original art for our neighborhood.

Interactive Art Projects
April 20-21 | Indoor & Outdoor Event | Banana Factory Arts Center
Choose from a variety of hands-on art projects for children and adults that are inspired by urban artists, including tattoo art, graffiti lettering, chalk art and more. Projects are sure to fire up your creativity! Registration is not required; drop-ins are welcome. Open to all ages.

Dan Mugrauer: Blood Moon
April 20-June 3 | Banana Factory Arts Center, Banko Gallery
Blood Moon features Dan Magrauer’s art and photography to highlight the creative inspiration he uses to create his tattoo art and commissions. Dan, a 28-year-old artist from Lansdale, PA, studied painting at School of the Art Institute of Chicago before his career led to tattooing which he has now done for six years. Dan is the co-owner of Blood Moon Tattoo Syndicate in Ambler, PA and the Musikfest 35th Anniversary Poster Artist.

Homebase610 Skate Contest

Stop by on Friday evening for an exciting skateboard contest with opportunities to win prizes! This event is hosted by Homebase610 Skateshop and skate obstacles were designed by a local artist. Waivers must be signed by skaters over the age of 18 or by legal parents/guardians to participate in any skateboarding events at the festival. Registration will begin two hours in advance; 5-7 p.m. on April 20.

ArtSmart & BASD Student Art Exhibitions

Come see these art exhibitions highlighting the work of Bethlehem Area School District students taking part in ArtsQuest school programs. Included are the Visiting Artist Residency at Donegan Elementary School, where 80 third-grade students work with art teacher Tiffany Anderson, ArtsQuest teaching artist Mallory Zondag and ArtSmart, an afterschool art program at the Banana Factory. This program is offered to 160 students from Donegan Elementary School, Broughal Middle School, East Hills Middle School, Nitschmann Middle School and Northeast Middle School.

Friends, family and the general public are invited to watch participants from the
“Push Ahead: Learn to Skate” programs at Donegan and Fountain Hill Elementary Schools demonstrate and show off their skills.Waivers must be signed by skaters over the age of 18 or by legal parents/guardians to participate in any skateboarding events at the festival. Registration will begin two hours in advance; 9-11 a.m. on April 21 at the Banana Factory Arts Center.

Lehigh Valley Art Wars 2018 Finale
April 21, 7-10 p.m. | Banana Factory Arts Center
Lehigh Valley Art Wars are live events where artists create in a competitive environment as a form of entertainment. At each battle, the artists have two hours to create their piece of work based on a theme provided. The artwork is then voted on by a combination of the audience and jury. The final round of Lehigh Valley Art Wars positions four finalists to compete for over $1,000 in cash and bragging rights as the new Lehigh Valley Art Wars Champion! Participating artists will be given a $125 stipend to Blick Art Supplies to purchase any substrate to create with and then the audience selects the final winner.

Compendium Juried Exhibition: (Land)scapes
March 17-May 6 | Banana Factory Arts Center, Banko Gallery
In addition to highlighting the Artist Collective Program year round programing, this exhibition features work from current members and seeks additional artists to participate in the growing network of local and regional artists. Compendium: (Land)scapes asks artists to consider the breadth of what a landscape is and contains as a form and what their relationship is to landscapes. A landscape does not need to be representational but can be fictional, psychological, imaginary and environmental.

SouthSide Arts District Mural Arts Project on the Greenway
A collaborative effort led by ArtsQuest, the SouthSide Arts District, Lehigh University and the SSAD Mural Arts Project will feature the creation of local artist-designed murals for temporary display along the South Side Greenway and permanent installation on buildings in Bethlehem. This effort is meant to build on public art initiatives and help reinforce the burgeoning SouthSide Arts District.
