NEW! Family Fishing Program
Presented by Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission
9 a.m.-12 p.m. | Lehigh Canal/ Sand Island, 146 River St.
The Family Fishing Program is for families with little or no fishing experience. Participants learn basic fishing skills and how to practice those skills while fishing during the program. The program is open to all ages, including children ages 5 and older. Those under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The program takes place on Sand Island and is free to attend. NEW! Kids Firefighter Challenge
10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Kistler O’Brien Fire Protection is proud to partner with ArtsQuest in presenting the first Kids FireFighter Challenge at Step Outdoors Lehigh Valley. The Bethlehem Fire Department and Kister O’Brien will be on-hand promoting fire safety, as well as how to respond if there is an emergency. Activities include navigating the obstacle course to discover what it takes to be a Firefighter.

Activities include:

  • Rescue Drag
  • Fire Hose Pull
  • Fire Hose Practice at Safety House
  • Dress Like a Firefighter

 

‘Walk With a Doc’ presented by St. Luke’s
June 1 | 10 a.m.
Step Outdoors participants have the unique opportunity to learn from a leading healthcare professional while enjoying an urban hike/walk during St. Luke’s University Health Network’s new Walk with a Doc program at the festival June 1, 10 a.m.

The event, led by St. Luke’s Medical Critical Care physician Dr. Jennifer Axelband, begins with a short educational talk by the doctor, followed by a walk at your own pace and distance. The walk begins at the base of the Hoover-Mason Trestle staircase adjacent to the visitor center; the event is free, but advance signup is requested.

 

‘Make Your Own Bluebird Box’ Family Workshop
Presented by Bluebird Society of Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Game Commission
Learn all about the colorful Eastern Bluebird and then build a bluebird box of your own with the help of members of the Bluebird Society of Pennsylvania. Once you finish your box, you can take it home and put it up on your property to help provide critical nesting habitat for these once threatened birds. This workshop is ideal for a parent and child to do together, as assembly is required. Bluebird box kit and all tools are supplied. A portion of the proceeds will go to support the nonprofit Bluebird Society of Pennsylvania.

South Bethlehem Urban Hike
Presented by Appalachian Mountain Club
10 a.m. | Starts at AMC Booth, leaves promptly at 10:15 a.m.
All ages are welcome to join in this urban loop hike along the South Bethlehem Greenway to Sand Island, follow the tow path to the Minsi Trail Bridge and then return to SteelStacks on the Greenway. There will be possible sightings of turtles, numerous birds and fish! The trail will be a mix of paved paths, some gravel and packed dirt. Sneakers are appropriate and hikers are asked to bring water and sunblock and a hat if it is sunny. Hike is approximately 1.5-2 hours. Leashed and well behaved dogs are welcome to join (please bring a bag for dog waste).

Bird Walk and Peregrine Falcon Watch
Presented by Lehigh Valley Audubon Society
LVAS will lead a bird walk from the SteelStacks campus to the Sands property near the site of a Peregrine Falcon nest. On the walk we will observe whatever birds we find along the way and if the falcons are nearby, we will spend several minutes observing before returning to campus. Binoculars are available to borrow with ID or participants can bring their own. Advance registration is requested, as space is limited.

Kokedama Hanging Plant
10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. | ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks
Learn how to make a kokedama, a moss wrapped hanging plant, which you can proudly display in a window at home or at work. Due to the difficulty level of this project, we would recommend this for individuals 16 and older. All supplies are included.

Succulent Terrarium
1-3 p.m. | ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks
Assemble your own peaceful terrarium to bring the outdoors inside, which you can proudly display in a window at home or at work. This is a great project for families and individuals. All supplies are included. Please note, ArtsQuest is not responsible for the lifespan of the succulents.

Hot Glass Experience: Succulent
12-4 p.m. | ArtsQuest Glass Studio
Ages 6 and up will have the opportunity to shape and manipulate hot furnace glass into a beautiful glass cactus in this exciting glass sculpting experience. With the guidance of one of our artists, you’ll work one-on-one to create your own glass artwork. Each session takes 20 minutes; prior experience is not necessary. Please be aware that all pieces made from molten glass need time to cool down. Participants will need to return another day to pick up their work or arrange for their pieces to be shipped for an extra charge. Cost: $50

Did you know that close to 20,000 raptors migrate past the Lehigh Valley every year? How do we identify them and why is it important to conserve these feathered predators? Can’t make the presentation? Our 2,500 acre sanctuary is open to members year-round!

5-7 p.m. | The Levitt Pavilion
The fun doesn’t end at 5 p.m! Stay late for the brand new Yappy Hour at the Levitt Paw-ivilion on June 1 after Step Outdoors. Yappy Hour is a FREE event for dogs and their owners! Guests and their furry friends are invited to come backstage and relax before the 7 p.m. The New Respects show, part of our Levitt Free Summer Concert Series. Visitors can socialize with adult beverages and snacks while your pup enjoys a variety of special doggie vendors!
