STEELSTACKS GRAND PRIX RETURNS WITH NEW TRACK & PUBLIC RACING UNDER THE LIGHTS

first-place-1

Event expands to three days, June 15-17, over Father’s Day Weekend

Rev up your engines as the SteelStacks Grand Prix returns for its second year with an all-new track layout, public racing under the lights and new attractions and activities. This year’s Grand Prix has expanded from one to three days, with exciting racing action taking place June 15-17.

At the SteelStacks Grand Prix, the public can race high-speed go-karts around a nearly half-mile track that winds though PNC Plaza at SteelStacks. The course, which is specially designed for the event by Mike McCreary and Lehigh Valley Grand Prix, provides ample room for action-packed racing, with cars capable of reaching 40 MPH.

“It is an exciting opportunity to bring one of the largest consumer karting events in the nation to the Lehigh Valley,” says McCreary. “The partnership with ArtsQuest and Lehigh Valley Grand Prix is a great fit to deliver the ultimate racing experience.”

This year, the public is invited to open public racing sessions on June 15, 4-11 p.m., and June 17, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Cost for public racing is $25 per person and includes a safety briefing, helmet and eight minutes of track time; proceeds will go to support ArtsQuest and its arts education programming for the community. Tickets for the public session will be sold on a first-come basis at the track starting at 3 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Highlighting the weekend’s activities at the Grand Prix is the Corporate Challenge, featuring 30-plus corporate teams battling it out for the checkered flag to raise funds to support ArtsQuest’s arts education programing for the community. Over the past two years, the nonprofit ArtsQuest has doubled its educational programming for the region, providing enriching classes, workshops and field trips for more than 5,000 youth, as well as veterans and individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities.

The corporate challenge, a Le Mans style race which takes place June 16, will feature two qualifying sessions – one from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and a second from 1-5 p.m. – with the finals set for 6:30 p.m. Fans will be able to watch all the action track-side, including ‘grandstands’ set up just for the event. Among the businesses already confirmed to take part in the challenge are Aesthetic Surgery Associates, Bazella Group, Chevy 21, Christmas City Veterinary Hospital, Deiter Brothers, Lehigh Valley Health Network, Levan Associates, Sands Resort and Service Electric Cable TV & Communications. In the event of inclement weather, the Corporate Challenge will take place June 17.

Other activities and attractions during the Grand Prix include the showing of World Cup matches like Mexico vs. Germany (June 16, 11 a.m.) and Iceland vs. Argentina (June 16, 9 a.m.), as well as free 7:30 p.m. Levitt Pavilion concerts by Choir! Choir! Choir! June 15, JUTAUN June 16 and Southern Avenue June 17. Red Robin Catering will also be on site during the weekend, offering a variety of great food options for Corporate Challenge participants June 16 and Grand Prix attendees June 17.

Local businesses and corporations that want to get in on all the racing action at the Corporate Challenge can do so by contacting ArtsQuest Sr. Director of Business Development Nicole Dotta at ndotta@artsquest.org or 610-332-1334. All businesses that sponsor a car are able to enter their own five-person team in the event, as well as enjoy a variety of other great benefits.

Other partners helping to make the Grand Prix possible include Barry Bartakovits and Jim “The Judge” Stocklas, 99.9 The Hawk and Service Electric, which will broadcast the Corporate Challenge. For more information on the SteelStacks Grand Prix, visit www.steelstacks.org.

Bethlehem Steel FC Partners with ArtsQuest to Present 2018 Lehigh Valley SoccerFest at SteelStacks

soccerfestpressrelease_web

BETHLEHEM, PA—Bethlehem Steel FC, the professional soccer team that plays within view of the iconic Bethlehem Steel blast furnaces at SteelStacks, is partnering with the nonprofit ArtsQuest to present the 2018 Lehigh Valley SoccerFest & Viewing Party at SteelStacks this summer. The festival will kick off with the start of the World Cup in Russia June 14 and run through the finals match July 15.

During SoccerFest, the SteelStacks campus will air all of the World Cup matches on the Levitt Pavilion and PBS39 outdoor screens on the campus. Several of the matches will also be broadcast in Spanish, including the matches taking place during the free Sabor Latin Festival at SteelStacks June 22-24.

On June 16, Bethlehem Steel FC will present a free soccer clinic for children ages 5-12, and on June 23 Lehigh Valley United will offer a multi-lingual soccer clinic that includes coaches and staff from the region’s soccer and youth soccer programs. The multi-lingual clinic is designed to celebrate the many cultures that come together every four years for the World Cup, as well as the appeal that soccer, the World’s Game, has around the globe.

“We are excited to partner with ArtsQuest on this year’s Lehigh Valley SoccerFest at SteelStacks,” Bethlehem Steel FC Director of Business Operations Scott Evans says. “The world’s most popular sport during the world’s largest spectacle gives us the opportunity to continue to build awareness of pro soccer in the Lehigh Valley. We are looking forward to being a part of the entertaining atmosphere.”

During SoccerFest, Bethlehem Steel FC and ArtsQuest will also celebrate the original Bethlehem Steel Football Club, which played from 1907–’30, and its most well-known player, Archie Stark. In the 1924-’25 season, Stark’s first with the team, he scored 67 goals, a season record that remained in place for 87 years until Argentinian star Lionel Messi broke the record during the 2011-’12 season for FC Barcelona.

On June 16, Bethlehem Steel Football Club historian Daniel Paul Morrison will offer a free presentation on how the Bethlehem Steel attracted players from England, Scotland, Wales and other European countries in the 1910s and ’20s, helping it become one of the original soccer powerhouses in America. Other activities and attractions planned for SoccerFest include family and arts programming, soccer tennis games and more. Complete details on the 2018 event will be announced later this spring.

“We are thrilled to once again air all the action from soccer’s biggest stage,” says ArtsQuest Chief Operating Officer Curt Mosel. “This year’s SoccerFest at SteelStacks will focus on the international popularity of soccer, tying in many of the cultures represented here in the Lehigh Valley. Thanks to the support of Bethlehem Steel FC and the hard work of SoccerFest Planning Committee Members Discover Lehigh Valley, Klunk & Millan Advertising, Garfield Group and Lehigh Valley United the event is shaping up to be a dynamic, fun-filled celebration of the World’s Game.”

Currently in its third season in the United Soccer League, Bethlehem Steel FC is the official USL affiliate of Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer. Also owned and operated by Keystone Sports and Entertainment LLC, the team started its inaugural season March 25, 2016 at FC Montreal and played the home opener at Lehigh University’s Goodman Stadium on April 3, 2016. Last season, Steel FC qualified for its first USL Cup Playoff appearance.

Launched in 2014, the Lehigh Valley SoccerFest & Viewing Party has aired the matches from World Cup Brazil™, the Women’s World Cup and the Copa America Centenario over the past four years. In 2014, more than 50,000 people visited the SteelStacks campus for the festival. The following summer, 8,500 people came out to watch the U.S. Women’s national soccer team top Japan in the finals of the Women’s World Cup from Canada.

Partners helping to make the free SoccerFest & Viewing Party possible include Bethlehem Steel FC, Discover Lehigh Valley, Kwik Goal, Klunk & Millan Advertising, Garfield Group and Lehigh Valley United.

Staff Music Picks: April 2018

april-music-picks

None of the ArtsQuest staff would work here if they didn’t live for music and the arts. To share our passion, our programming and social media teams put together a list of new-ish songs they’ve got on repeat this month. We hope you’ll enjoy our eclectic mix of musical tastes and discover some great new tunes!

Ben “The Resident Metalhead” Youngerman
Marketing Manager

“Lightning Strike” – Judas Priest

Judas Priest still rips. Metal God Rob Halford & company’s newest album Firepower merges the vintage Priest sound with 2018 metal sensibilities. It’s another awesome addition to the band’s legendary catalog, even as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame continues to snub them from induction. I can’t wait to blast “Lightning Stike” (and the entire album) in the car with the windows down this Spring! \m/ (*>*) \m/

Patrick “P. Diddy” Brogan
Chief Programming Officer

“Something To Believe In” – The New Respects

This indie blues rock group is all in the family. Literally. Lead singer Jasmine Mullen alongside her twin sisters, brother, and cousins make up this lifelong Nashville family band who plays a mix of ’70s funk and rock meets Alabama Shakes soul and blues. With “Something To Believe In” the group encourages you to have hope in dark times, possibly shaped by their Christian-music-only upbringing. But fear not, the sounds of rock and soul have found their way into all of this groups music and it’s truly wonderful.

Dani “I Stil Listen to Radio” Nightlinger
Marketing Intern

“Celebrate” – Dirty Heads

This song is about the sacrifices artists make to be on tour and follow their passion for music. Instead of seeing their families every night in a warm bed they are sleeping on a small tour bus standing in front of a bunch of strangers they call fans. Kyle Morris from The Unlikely Candidates originally recorded, but the Dirty Heads asked to put their sound into it and it got my attention a lot more on the radio than the first time around!

Matt “Hip-Hop & R&B Boy” Gotzon
Partnership Activation Specialist

“Effortless” – Wale

In the past month Wale dropped his It’s Complicated EP. This is the first project we’ve gotten from the MMG rapper since his departure from Atlantic Records. My favorite track is “Effortless” by the self-proclaimed and fan backed poetic genius. On Instagram he let the world know that this EP was “a story about ‘a’ love life.” Maybe this isn’t technically a personal story, but a beautiful one to listen to none the less. I consider Wale to be one of the most underrated rap veterans in the game. So, if you haven’t heard his stuff before please take the time to check it out. His Ambition album is my favorite to date. Either way you should get “Effortless” into your rotation, if you haven’t already!

Alicia “Better in Boots” Rohrbach
Senior Marketing & Sponsorship Coordinator

“Take It From Me” – Jordan Davis

Jordan Davis released his debut album Home State on March 23rd and I’m pretty sure I’ve already worn it out (figuratively speaking – my copy is digital). He released the catchy, impossible not to sing along to “Singles You Up” last year – which I also loved. I am a fan of many tracks on this album (“Tough to Tie Down”, “Selfish”, “Made That Way” and the list goes on) but “Take it From Me” is my favorite track. It’s fun, catchy, and upbeat – the type of song that has me in the mood for the weather to change so I can listen to it with the windows rolled down. Check out the whole album – he’s definitely my new favorite country artist.

Kimberly “The Wild Card” Koehler
Partnership Activation Specialist

“Say Amen (Saturday Night)” – Panic! At the Disco

Panic! At the Disco is one of the bands that will forever hold a special place in my heart. I have been listening them for over 12 years and they never cease to amazing me with their talent in each album release. While Pray For the Wicked has not been released, Panic! At the Disco’s lead single “Say Amen (Saturday Night)” is fantastic. Brendon Urie is an amazing vocalist and this song showcase his talents once again. “Say Amen (Saturday Night)” has a great foot tapping beat and I’ve found myself humming the song around the office since the single dropped. Needless to say, I can’t wait until June when the rest of the album is released.

Emily “The Funk Junkie” Cummins
Public Relations Coordinator

“Journal of Adency” – Class Actress

I just watched the premier of HBO’s new dark comedy Barry, which stars Bill Hader as a hitman turned novice actor, and in addition to it being wildly funny and weird, I absolutely fell in love with the song Sarah Goldberg’s Sally dances to. I played it a few times on repeat before deciding it was the perfect song to pick for April. That is until I found out that Class Actress released its debut album Journal of Ardency in 2009! So it’s not new, but new to me. I can’t get over the chilling mix of the synth heavy beat and breathy vocals by Elizabeth Vanessa Harper. In 2009 I was almost solely listening to Metric and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs so I’m fairly surprised I missed out on Class Actress, but so happy to have found the trio now.

Cory “Don’t Put Me In A Genre Box” Stelzman
Performing Arts Coordinator

“Bad Bad News” – Leon Bridges

Leon Bridges tends to blow everything else out of the water. His old school sound and killer vocals are what initially drew me to love him with his debut album Coming Home. “Bad Bad News” maintains an old school sound, but instead of the bluesy melodies that you hear in Coming Home this song plays as a jazzy dance number. I’ll say it. You can hold me too it. Leon Bridges can do no wrong. New album out May 4.

Helen “New Wave” Smith
Talent Buyer

“Connected By Love” – Jack White

“Connected by Love” was the first song off of Jack White’s new album that he wrote in a Nashville apartment he keeps to work on new material. I love the psychedelic melody and the gospel feel of the backing vocals from Ann and Regina McCrary. It straddles the line of White’s familiar guitar riffs while delving into a kind of new territory genre-wise. Jack White. What a guy.

Amber “Genre Trainwreck” Galdamez
Communications Coordinator

“Cool” – Felix Jaehn ft. Marc E. Bassy & Gucci Mane

I’ve been a follower of Marc E. Bassy since he was the lead singer of the now disbanded 2AM Club. Therefore my review of this song may be just slightly biased by that, but only slightly. This banger produced by German/Dutch DJ Felix Jaehn features some of his signature tropical-house beats accompanied by the perfectly angelic voice of Marc E. Bassy and rapper Gucci Mane. Can Euro DJs really ever go wrong?

Anne “The Alternative Solution” Sturm
Senior Talent Buyer

“Game to Lose” – I’m With Her

The smooth, nimble, vocals from all three voices of the virtuosic trio of Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, and Aoife O’Donovan provides a perfect balance with the violin in this song. The song is both delicate and bold and certainly displays the talent from all three members of I’m With Her.

Jason “Anything But Country” Merola
Manager of Experiential Programming

“Card Shark” – Mo Lowda & the Humble

Mo Lowda & the Humble from Philadelphia, and more importantly, Pennsbury High School, are back with their second album Creatures bringing the same great sounds that they displayed from their debut album Curse the Weather. Lead singer Jordan Caoila rocks the mic with his signature raspy vocals that gives the band the unique sound that makes every song a hit.

Houston Ain’t Singing The Blues

Blast Furnace Blues Festival Preview

By Mark Demko, ArtsQuest Senior Director of Communications

As a lifelong resident of the Houston area, Trudy Lynn has seen a lot during her nearly seven decades in the Bayou City. Nothing, however, could have prepared her for the destruction wrought by Hurricane Harvey last fall.

“We’ve had storms and things here, but they weren’t ever as devastating as that storm was,” says Lynn, one of the headliners of this year’s Blast Furnace Blues Festival at SteelStacks.

According to the Houston Music Hall of Famer and five-time Blues Music Award nominee, Harvey hit the community hard, including some of the musicians and clubs. Rock Romano, a longtime friend and colleague of Lynn’s, had his Red Shack Recording Studio damaged by flooding, while Lynn, herself, sustained home damage as a result of the gale force winds.

“I had a pecan tree fall across the back of the house–one of the bedrooms and the roof fell in,” she says.

The silver lining amid all the devastation? The Houston community came together en masse to help out those in need. At Romano’s studio, for example, friends and neighbors worked side by side to clean up and get the business back in action.

“It was just amazing to see,” Lynn says. “Everybody pulled together. It didn’t make no difference – color, size, creed or what – everybody pulled together and helped one another out.”

From March 23-25, Blast Furnace Blues attendees will have an opportunity to hear a number of artists from the Houston area music scene when they perform at the festival. In all, seven of the 19 artists at this year’s event hail from Southeast Texas including Step Rideau & the Zydeco Outlaws, Steve Krase Band, The Mighty Orq, Brad Absher & Swamp Royale, boogie woogie piano player Ezra Charles and steel guitarist John Egan.

ArtsQuest Chief Programming Officer Patrick Brogan, who’s responsible for booking Blast Furnace Blues, says the idea for bringing in nearly 40 percent of this year’s festival lineup from Houston was born after a number of people asked ArtsQuest staff if there was any way it could contribute to hurricane relief efforts.

“We thought that rather than adding to our very robust and demanding programing schedule, we’d look for the right opportunities to partner in some way and offer a relief effort or fundraise for a relief effort,” Brogan says.

In October, leaders of the Lehigh Valley’s Latino community approached ArtsQuest about holding a benefit concert for the victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, and ArtsQuest staff responded by hosting and helping present performances by EnSecuencia, L Urban Orquesta, Orquesta Xariz and others at the Levitt Pavilion on Nov. 5. Around the same time, Brogan was contacted by one of 2017’s Blast Furnace Blues performers, singer Diunna Greenleaf.

“Diunna called me and said, ‘My community needs work here in Houston. Is there anything you can do?’ Brogan recalls. “Blast Furnace Blues, where she had performed the year before, seemed like a natural connection to bring some Houston based artists to.

“It was an opportunity to give them work, which is a paycheck for them as a band. Plus, they are going on to play additional dates here in the Northeast, so they got additional work as a result of the bookings.”

Going one step further, Brogan also eliminated the house’s take on merchandise sales for the Houston area artists during Blast Furnace Blues, allowing them to keep 100 percent of the proceeds.

“This is an area that is very profitable to a touring artist – that’s cash going right into their pockets,” Brogan says. “Performing at Blast Furnace Blues also helps them grow their audience and making new fans, which, we hope, helps to offset some of the lost opportunities back home.”

For Lynn, ArtsQuest’s focus on providing opportunities for Houston-area artists to support their livelihood through performances at SteelStacks came as a surprise. She says it was the first time she has heard of a festival or organization elsewhere trying to do something specifically for her region’s blues artists following the devastation of Hurricane Harvey.
“A lot of people got messed up here in Houston…and a lot of them still are,” she says. “I’m just in awe (over this); I think that is just so wonderful! It really is.”

Staff Music Picks: March 2018

march-music-picks_web

None of the ArtsQuest staff would work here if they didn’t live for music and the arts. To share our passion, our programming and social media teams put together a list of new-ish songs they’ve got on repeat this month. We hope you’ll enjoy our eclectic mix of musical tastes and discover some great new tunes!

Emily “The Funk Junkie” Cummins
Public Relations Coordinator

“Make Me Feel” – Janelle Monáe

I will always pick something good to dance to, and “Make Me Feel,” fresh off Monáe’s upcoming “Dirty Computer” album, is a show stopper. It’s pure synth-pop fun with just the right amount of throwback funk. I love the soft energy of it and the playfulness of the guitar. Of course what really stands out is the music video which is eye-popping and electric and features stunning visual tributes to Prince and Bowie. I could watch it on repeat, but I think I’d rather dance.

Ben “The Resident Metalhead” Youngerman
Marketing Manager

“What It Is” – Jonathan Davis

Jonathan Davis, lead singer of Korn, rarely takes a break from making music and has never settled for making the same type of album in successive outputs. Over the course of twelve Korn studio albums, a few movie scores, a stint as a dubstep DJ and a cabaret tour with JDSFA, my favorite front-man is finally putting out a solo record. “What It Is” draws from many elements of Davis’ past music, creating a very catchy first offering off of his solo disc. I can’t wait to hear this song live on tour this Spring!

Cory “Don’t Put Me In A Genre Box” Stelzman
Performing Arts Coordinator

“Listening In” – Dr. Dog

Dr. Dog has been a consistent on my playlists for the past 10 years. Every year or so they release a new album and I have yet to be disappointed. “Listening In” is one of the tracks from their new album Critical Equation that comes out next month. It’s the perfect easy listening song with ethereal vocals and an almost haunting melody fitting for a scene with that monster guy from Stranger Things.

Talent Buyer

“Beverly” – Low Cut Connie

With Low Cut Connie on my mind this week, my first monthly music pick had to be their new single “Beverly” off of their upcoming album Dirty Pictures Pt. II. A lovely string quartet intro and then Adam is off and rocking with Shondra. I’m very ready to hear Low Cut Connie at SteelStacks on March 3.

“God’s Plan” – Drake

A little over a month ago Drake dropped two songs, “God’s Plan” and “Diplomatic Immunity,” under the title Scary Hours. “God’s Plan” went on to break several different streaming records and proceeded to change many fanss Instagram bios to “I only love my bed and my momma, I’m sorry.” Drake reconnected with Director X and blessed the world with the visuals on February 16. In the music video, Drake and other members of the OVO crew give away nearly one million dollars to different organizations, schools, and families. Good luck not tearing up watching the heartwarming video below. My favorite part about it all is that it seems like Drake just wants to genuinely do something good for those that deserve it, rather than just trying to show us how nice he is. Either way you should definitely get “God’s Plan” into your rotation, if you haven’t already!

Ryan “Comedian Who Likes Music” Hill
Programming Director

“Happy Hour” – Weezer

While I like the vibe of Happy Hour, I love the fact that the video I’m including was done by Allentown-raised NYC comic Jim Tews, who made this band-approved animation after half-jokingly responding to a tweet by Rivers Cuomo asking if fans had any ideas for the song’s video. Cuomo responded back, and Tews – who has a Weezer tribute band called The Undone Sweaters – ran with it from there.

Dani “I Stil Listen to Radio” Nightlinger
Marketing Intern

“Next To Me” – Imagine Dragons

The intro instantly grabs my attention with the fingerpicked acoustic guitar and strange drum pattern. The lead singer Dan Reynolds has such a smooth, strong voice that I could just close my eyes and escape reality during this song. The choral-style vocals in the background with electronic effects is so different that I have this alt-rock band’s song on repeat for the past few days. It’s about a women who stays by a man’s side no matter how many times he messes up and I love that loyalty.

Anne “The Alternative Solution” Sturm
Senior Talent Buyer

“Silver Lining” – Mt. Joy

Mt. Joy is an emerging indie/folk/rock group based out of my hometown near King of Prussia, PA. Their song “Silver Lining” is appearing to be one of their break through songs with over 3.2 million listens after just a couple of months from its release. “Silver Lining” is a good reminder to grasp the hopeful side of any situation. Even the worst events can have some positive aspect. The song is also just really catchy.

Alicia “Better in Boots” Rohrbach
Senior Marketing & Sponsorship Coordinator

“Asking For A Friend” – Devin Dawson

Devin Dawson released his first album in the early part of this year – and this is my favorite song on the album. My favorite part of any song are the lyrics and the story of the song. This particular song is about a guy who messed up his relationship and is trying to win the girl back – and the melody is also super catchy. Check out the whole album, Dark Horse, as I love a majority of the songs – but I find myself playing this track on repeat the most.

Kimberly “The Wild Card” Koehler
Partnership Activation Specialist

“Master Plan” – Ron Pope

Ron Pope has always been my go-to slow, sweet love song whenever I need to fulfill that musical genre itch and he does not disappoint with “Master Plan” off his new album. “Master Plan” reminds everyone that no matter what, everything will work out in the end because you love each other. Whenever this song comes on in my playlist, it allows me to sit back and relax because of its slow tempo and Pope’s voice.
