Bodacious ’80s Bands in Bethlehem!

80s post
By Ben Youngerman, ArtsQuest Marketing Manager

The ’80s were an eclectic time in music. As disco faded from prominence, genres like new wave, power pop and dance music took its place. Hair bands were a thing some of us might not want to admit happened, while some rockers from the 1970’s grew their popularity during the following decade.

At ArtsQuest, we love everything ’80s! So we’re bringing some of the decades best bands, singers and songwriters from the decade to SteelStacks and Musikfest over the next few months. To celebrate, we found a classic live ’80s performance from each for you to enjoy! Righteous, dudes!

THE ROMANTICS

Friday, July 29 – Musikfest Cafe presented by Yuengling

It’s safe to say if you haven’t heard the song “What I Like About You”, you’ve probably never turned on a radio before. The Romantics blasted into popularity with this 1980 hit. You know a song has made a cultural impact when it’s featured on a Diet Coke can 36 years after release.

But they’re no one-hit wonder. The Romantics have gone on to accomplish many great things throughout their career. Until you see their biggest hits LIVE at SteelStacks, enjoy this classic performance of their transcendent song!

DON HENLEY

Wednesday, August 10 – Musikfest

Being a founding member of the Eagles would have been enough to cement Don Henley’s place in the foundation of rock history. But the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer also became one of the prolific solo artists of his time with hits like “The Boys of Summer”, “All She Wants to Do is Dance”, “The End of the Innocence”, “New York Minute” and “Dirty Laundry”.

With a mix of his Eagles classics and solo hits, we can’t wait to see Don Henley at Musikfest. To tide you over, here’s a 1985 Farm Aid performance of “Sunset Grill”!

BOSTON

Tuesday, August 9 – Musikfest

Boston celebrates its 40th Anniversary at Musikfest this year, releasing one of the most successful debut album of all-time in 1976. With mega-hits like “More Than a Feeling” and “Don’t Look Back”, it’s surprising that their only song to reach #1 on the charts came in 1986 with “Amanda”. Concert goers didn’t have cellphone video back then, so we’re super stoked to find this rare fan video of the song from a 1988 concert.

THE HOOTERS

Wednesday, August 24 – Yuengling Summer Concert Series

Double-dose of totally tubular: The Hooters were not only big on MTV, they’re also from Philadelphia. Their songs such as “All You Zombies”, “And We Danced” and “Day By Day” have that quintessential ’80s feel. What a perfect vibe for an outdoor concert at SteelStacks!

COLIN HAY

Saturday, July 23 – Musikfest Cafe presented by Yuengling

Colin Hay is familiar to millions as the frontman, songwriter, and vocalist of pop sensation Men at Work. Their 1983 song “Down Under” was arguably one of the biggest hits of the decade. They were the first Australian artists to have a simultaneous No. 1 album and No. 1 single in the United States Billboard charts. Since moving to the U.S. in 1989, Hay has made 11 critically-acclaimed solo albums, and has had his songs featured in TV and film (including his several cameos on Scrubs).

Take a ’90s Nostalgia Trip: Summerland Tour 2016

2589
By Ben Youngerman, ArtsQuest Marketing Manager

Yo! What’s the dillio, friends?! Don’t wig out, but it’s been 17 years since the end of the 1990s. Whateverrrr. That decade was so phat that we decided to bring four of the tightest bands from that era to SteelStacks on July 20: the Summerland Tour 2016 starring Sugar Ray, Everclear, Lit & Sponge!

To get you freakin’ excited for those bands, let’s take a nostalgia trip back to some of their old school moments from the ’90s…

In 1997, you and your friends would freak out while watching TRL. Especially with Mark McGrath bouncing off the walls in the video for Sugar Ray’s #1 hit “Fly”…

Mark McGrath straight chillin’ in the TRL photo booth.

Mark McGrath chillin' in that TRL photobooth.

In 1999, you had to give props to Everclear’s hit song “I Will Buy You a New Life”. Especially this mad good version at the most infamous of ’90s festivals: Woodstock 99…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmjeyR-S5dc

This super sweet song was also featured on the soundtrack for “Blast From the Past” featuring two of the most stylin’ ’90s movie stars: Brendan Fraser and Alicia Silverstone!

You totally remember blaring “My Own Worst Enemy” by Lit out the roll-down windows of your car during the summer of 1999. Plus, the fans in the stands are straight up ’90s…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFIe9e1QG_U

Back in the day, David Letterman had curly hair and no glasses. That’s when Sponge played a hella awesome version of their hit song “Plowed” on his show…

And if you need some more jams while you work to make that cheddar, here’s a Spotify playlist for you, dawg…

Peace out!

Dress to Impress at Soccerfest!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
By Ben Youngerman, ArtsQuest Marketing Manager

SoccerFest presented by Discover Lehigh Valley returns June 3, 7 & 11, and we want you to be the belle of the (soccer) ball! If you live and breathe Team USA, you have to look the part. With thousands of fellow soccer fans around, it’s difficult to stand out in the crowd with just a basic red, white and blue outfit. So we’re here with some suggestions and pictures to spark your patriotic creativity as you cheer the U.S. to Copa America victory!

FACE PAINT

Go full flag with these variations of Old Glory…

If you’re not looking to go full-out face paint, try something like these simple, more modest designs.

For more skilled artists, go for the “Eagle Eye” look…

…the American butterfly…

…or the partial Lady Liberty.

Or grab a couple buddies and spell out “USA” together! Just remember to stay in the correct order all day. For super patriotic bonus points, get 20 friends to join you and spell out “United States of America”!

Some paint application pro-tips from Parenting.com:

1. Start by avoiding oil-based face paints. They tend to smear, are harder to remove and clog pores.
2. Just dab a corner of a makeup sponge or soft-bristled brush in water and start painting.
3. Finish the look with sparkle! Look for nontoxic, fabric-based glitter (found at fabric and crafts stores). To apply, dip the opposite tip of the paintbrush into water, dry off excess and dip into glitter. Roll the glitter onto the face.

HEADGEAR

After the face paint, compliment the look with some appropriate head gear!

A jazzed up Uncle Sam hat or colorful mohawk work well…

Or perhaps represent your home area with a food hat like corn, cheese or a cheesesteak…

soccer-fans-4-600x450

Show some peace and love to the opposing team…

Or show that you’ve really got soccer on your mind…

Can’t find one or make one? Shave one!

WARDROBE

As for the rest of your outfit, there’s so many things to do.

Rocking your favorite team scarf is a classic way to compliment your patriotic garb…

SteelStacks Sessions: On the rooftop with Slingshot Dakota

2272
By Ben Youngerman, ArtsQuest Marketing Manager

A pop-punk band on the roof. Sounds crazy, no? But in our little town of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania we’re super proud of Slingshot Dakota. That’s why they were the perfect choice to be the first featured artist in our SteelStacks Sessions performance series.

The married couple was recently named one of Rolling Stone’s 10 New Artists You Need to Know, calling pianist Carly Comando and drummer Tom Patterson “one of the most unique rock bands in the United States.” Slingshot Dakota was also featured on NPR, spoke with Consequence of Sound, and absolutely crushed it at SXSW.

So last year at Musikfest, we asked the duo to perform an acoustic set on the roof at the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks. Performing multiple songs on the picturesque day and answering our silly questions, this is a unique music performance you have to see. And, if you dig their music (which you totally will), come out to the Slingshot Dakota Album Release Show at SteelStacks on Friday, June 10!

What We Like About The Romantics

romantics-8x10-no logo -4-14-15

By Ben Youngerman, ArtsQuest Marketing Manager

If you’ve lived on the planet Earth within the last 3 1/2 decades, you’ve heard the 1980 smash hit “What I Like About You” by The Romantics on the radio, at a sporting event or in a television commercial. The band was by no means a one-hit wonder, with several other hits topping charts in the United States and all over the World.

In honor of The Romantics playing the Musikfest Cafe presented by Yuengling on July 29th, we’ve put together a list of things we like about the quintessential 1980’s new wave/pop rock band.

Lehigh Valley SoccerFest Returns to SteelStacks for Copa America This June

BETHLEHEM, PA—The free Lehigh Valley SoccerFest & Viewing Party, which attracted more than 75,000 cheering fans to Bethlehem the past two summers, returns to SteelStacks this June for the Copa America Centenario tournament. The festival, which is presented by Discover Lehigh Valley, will feature all three of the U.S.A.’s opening round matches vs. Colombia (June 3, 9:30 p.m.), Costa Rica (June 7, 8 p.m.) and Paraguay (June 11, 7 p.m.). The games will be shown on a large LED screen on the Air Products Town Square; additional matches will be shown should the U.S. team advance.

Launched in 2014 to coincide with World Cup Brazil™, the Lehigh Valley SoccerFest is designed to bring the community together in a celebration of the world’s cultures and the “world’s game.” During the festival’s first two years, the event attracted single-game crowds of up to 10,000 to SteelStacks on the city’s former steel mill site, grabbing the attention of ESPN, USA Today, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Los Angeles Times and dozens of other media outlets across the nation.

Highlights of this year’s SoccerFest include a children’s soccer clinic, run by the Bethlehem Steel FC and Philadelphia Union, on June 7 at 6 p.m., along with concerts at the Levitt Pavilion by Fleetwood Mac tribute band TUSK (June 3, 7:30 p.m.) and The Cedric Burnside Project (June 11, 5 p.m.). Delicious food, vendors offering soccer merchandise and free family programming, including youth soccer activities run by Lehigh Valley United and soccer tennis by Kwik Goal, round out the activities and attractions during the event. On June 11, SteelStacks will also host the “Food Truck Border Brawl,” featuring 16 area food trucks, prior to the start of SoccerFest. Tickets for that event are on sale now at www.steelstacks.org.

“Our region has really demonstrated its passion for soccer the past two years through its attendance at our World Cup™ viewing events,” says ArtsQuest Sr. Vice President of Marketing & Advancement Curt Mosel. “We’re excited to show the Copa America matches, and we know fans will come out to cheer on the U.S. men’s team. From free concerts at the Levitt Pavilion to the new food truck event on June 11, there will be plenty of great events and activities for everyone to enjoy.”

In addition to showing the U.S.A’s matches on the screen at SteelStacks, SoccerFest is working with area restaurants and pubs to establish additional viewing locations for other Copa matches. During June, locations such as McCarthy’s Red Stag Pub and Molly’s Irish Bar & Grille in Bethlehem will be showing the games, offering fans a variety of options for catching all the action from the longest running international soccer tournament in the world.

“One of the primary goals in developing SteelStacks was to help support tourism and economic development in our city and our region,” says Mosel. “By partnering with area restaurants and pubs, we’re hoping we can shine the spotlight on a few of the many dynamic businesses that make the Lehigh Valley such a great place to live, work and play.”

The historic Copa America Centenario marks not only 100 years since 1916’s first Copa America, but also the first time the championship will be staged in the U.S. From June 3-26, matches will take place in 10 NFL stadiums across the country, including Pasadena’s Rose Bowl and East Rutherford’s MetLife Stadium.

The Lehigh Valley SoccerFest is a partnership between Discover Lehigh Valley, Lehigh Valley United, Lehigh Mining & Navigation and ArtsQuest. Sponsors of the 2016 event include Discover Lehigh Valley, Kwik Goal, Outlets at Sands Bethlehem, Lehigh Valley Health Network, Air Products, Red Robin, Bethlehem Steel FC and PBS39. The festival begins at 6 p.m. June 3 and 7, and at 5 p.m. on June 11; additional details on the soccer clinic will be announced soon.
