SteelStacks Comedy: January Shows Worth Braving the Cold

january-comedy
By Ben Youngerman, ArtsQuest Marketing Manager

Yeah, it’s colder than a penguin’s beak right now, but it shouldn’t stop you from enjoying live comedy. SteelStacks has a waddle (that’s seriously what a group of penguins is called) of comedy shows to warm your frozen body and soul this January!

The Major Festival

Penguins migrate about 75 miles every year. The biggest comedy event on the SteelStacks calendar is back and totally worth the same frozen trek.

SteelStacks Improv Comedy Festival – 1/26-27 – buy tickets

The SteelStacks Improv Comedy Festival is two days of almost-but-not-quite non-stop improv comedy. Each day features a marathon-style lineup of sets by performers from around the world.

This year’s fest will feature performances by The Law Firm, North Coast and 50+ more improv teams!

The Regularly Scheduled Shows

There are a couple of shows that happen on a regularly scheduled basis. That doesn’t make them less special, on the contrary, it makes them dependable ways to get out of the house and avoid cabin fever.

Improv Comedy Power Hour – 2nd & 4th Saturdays, 10:30pm – buy tickets

The Improv Comedy Power Hour is 60 minutes of completely unscripted, high-energy longform improv performed by two of our resident comedy teams, Family Laundry and Staycation!

Nerd Nite Bethlehem – Every 3rd Thursday, 8pm – buy tickets

Each night three speakers will present talks on a range of topics from science, video games, technology, and other nerdy pursuits. Grab a beer, pull up a seat, and learn something interesting at this unique event. Hosted by Lehigh Valley-based standup & writer Glen Tickle.

The Special, One-Night-Only Shows

These shows will be over before you break your New Year’s resolution. So grab your gloves and grab your tickets before they’re gone.

Colin Quinn – 1/6 – buy tickets

From the old MTV days to SNL to Comedy Central to Broadway, CQ is apparently refusing to leave the business. So if you enjoyed his other one man shows, or you just are at a place in your life where you are lost and you need intelligent laughs, come see his new show.

#BestOf Fake News – 1/11 – buy tickets

Everyone lies, right? FALSE. Only the multi-national global illuminati media lies. We will call out their every hypocrisy and dismantle the programming they’ve run you through for YEARS. With a team of seasoned fakie newsie busters, we will run high level search & destroy missions on literally every fake piece of news in your brain. Trust us.

Raymond the Amish Comic – 1/13 – buy tickets

The first (and only) Amish stand-up comedian in the world. With 25 years of show business experience, Raymond The Amish Comic is a high-energy ranting-storyteller. Fans and club owners have called him an Amish Robin Williams.

Dry Humor: Stand-up For Recovery – 1/17 – buy tickets

Easton’s Liz Russo will hold a comedy show fundraiser in celebration of her 7-year sober anniversary and to raise much needed funds for addiction treatment. You don’t need to be in recovery to attend the show, just a willingness to laugh.

The Incredible Shrinking Matt and Jacquie
(w/ The Flumplenarfs)
– 1/20 – buy tickets

Philadelphia duo Matt & Jacquie’s dark, absurd, and surprisingly genuine sketches feature doomed idiots who are just doing the best they can.

The Flumplenarfs are the creatures that live under your bed, but they’re far from scary. They perform improv comedy inspired by something you’re afraid of.

Improvised Standup – 1/20 – buy tickets

The Lehigh Valley’s best standups and improvisers face a new challenge when they’re given topics to talk about… while they’re onstage! And… YOU might even be the one providing the topic!

Jackie Kashian – 1/21 – buy tickets

Jackie Kashian is coming back to SteelStacks to headline after opening for Maria Bamford this past August! Jackie’s standup has been described as “like listening to a really racy episode of All Things Considered.” Her new album, I Am Not the Hero of This Story, is critically acclaimed and debuted at #1 on iTunes/Amazon.

NEARLY 90,000 PEOPLE VISIT CHRISTKINDLMARKT FOR EVENT’S 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Holiday Market Sets New Attendance Record for Third Year in a Row

BETHLEHEM, PA—Nearly 90,000 people enjoyed the holiday cheer and unique shopping experience at Christkindlmarkt Bethlehem during the event’s six-weekend run, Nov. 17-Dec. 23 at SteelStacks. The 2017 attendance of 88,923 was up 28 percent from the 69,439 who attended last year, and marked the third year in a row the holiday marketplace has set a new attendance record.
Celebrating its Silver Anniversary this year, Christkindlmarkt featured a record number of artisans and vendors – more than 175 in all – with vendors coming from more than 20 states. This year’s calendar made it possible for ArtsQuest to add a sixth weekend to Christkindlmarkt, providing more opportunities than ever for people to visit and shop at the holiday market. In most years, the event takes place over five weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Kassie Hilgert, President and CEO of ArtsQuest, the nonprofit that presents Christkindlmarkt, says the expansion of Christkindlmarkt over the past two years has helped the event to not only draw more visitors to Bethlehem during the holiday season, but also provide additional support for small businesses throughout the region.

“Over the past 25 years, Christkindlmarkt has welcomed 1.3 million people to Bethlehem,” says Hilgert. “As a community-focused arts organization, we take great pride in showcasing our city and our region to so many people. Equally important, however, are the opportunities we provide to local and regional businesses. While our vendors come from across the country, the vast majority of them are from right here in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas of Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey.”

This year’s Christkindlmarkt featured 29 vendors who were at the market for the very first time. Among these were Elaine Pivinski, owner of Franklin Hills Vineyards, and her son Adam Flatt of The Social Still, the popular South Bethlehem distillery he runs with his wife Kate.

“As a small business in Bethlehem for 21 years, we were so proud to showcase our handcrafted wines, grown in the Lehigh Valley, at Christkindlmarkt this year,” Pivinski says. “This year was our first year at the event, so we weren’t sure what to expect, but it went way beyond our expectations. We discovered that everyone loves to support local products, and we received so much support from the visitors, the vendors and the ArtsQuest Family.”

Among the many highlights of Christkindlmarkt this year were the United States Postal Service’s “Big Blue Box,” which was on site to ship Christkindlmarkt shoppers’ packages to family and friends across the nation; expanded arts and crafts activities for children like make your own snow globe; and the return of Käthe Wohlfahrt, the renowned German ornament designer that has been attending the event since the 1990s. Famous for its nutcrackers, incense smokers, pyramids, schwibbogens and wood, glass and pewter ornaments, Käthe Wohlfahrt featured more than 2,000 handmade products at Christkindlmarkt, including a limited-edition Christkindlmarkt collectible ornament, the first ornament it has made for a North American holiday market.

“Connecting families to time honored holiday traditions is our goal,” says Steve Thoreson, President of Kathe Wohlfahrt North America. “For nearly 20 years, we’ve had the pleasure of partnering with the Bethlehem Christkindlmarkt, our longest running Christmas Market partnership in the U.S. This past year, we were excited to have collaborated on the design and production of the 25th anniversary ornament and completed the final touches on our Rothenburg Village façade. This one-of-a-kind shopping experience helps transport customers to a more European style shopping experience.”

Helping to make the Christkindlmarkt experience merry and bright for the thousands of visitors who attended the market were 28 supporting sponsors, as well as 670 volunteers who contributed more than 4,000 hours of time. Sixteen of those individuals celebrated 25 years of volunteering at the event and were recognized at a special volunteer event at Christkindlmarkt on Nov. 19. They are: Jean Achey of Bethlehem; Joyce Butz of Allentown; Marjorie Dominick of Bethlehem; Linda Galitis of Bethlehem; William Gerencher of Bethlehem; Shoshanna Hinder of Allentown; AnneMarie Linsky of Phillipsburg; Nicholas Martocci of Roseto; Debra McNelis of Bethlehem; Justine F. Mitala of Easton; Anthony Sabino of Coopersburg; John Shivok of Bethlehem; Gerald Still of Bethlehem; Mary Lou Straka of Bethlehem; Stephanie Turek of Bethlehem; and Cindy Workman of Bethlehem.

This year, ArtsQuest also launched a new “Snowflake Campaign” to help raise awareness of its educational programs for area young people. When people purchased a Christkindlmarkt admission ticket, they were asked if they’d like to donate $1 to support educational programming, and anyone who did so was given a blue snowflake they could sign and hang on the Christkindlmarkt trees or walls. By event’s end, more than 10,000 people had made a donation, helping to raise more than $10,000 to support programs like the ArtSmart afterschool enrichment program at the Banana Factory and the Visiting Artist Residency Program, which sends teaching artists into the classrooms at local schools to work collaboratively with teachers on integrated arts programming.

“Christkindlmarkt continues to grow in popularity with each passing year thanks to the generosity of our volunteers, partners, sponsors, artisans and, of course, our patrons,” Hilgert says. “Our entire staff was blown away by the support for the Snowflake Campaign this year – we are so grateful to have the backing of the entire community when it comes to this event.”

“When people visit Christkindlmarkt, it’s often just one of the stops in their Christmas City experience. The majority of them go on to ride the trolley, shop on Bethlehem’s SouthSide or Main Street and stay and eat in our world-class restaurants. There’s no doubt that Christmastime is one of the best times of the year to be in the Christmas City.”

A one-of-a-kind family event that brings the spirit of Bethlehem alive with the season, Christkindlmarkt has twice been named one of the best holiday markets in the U.S. by Travel + Leisure, as well as one of the top holiday markets in the world by Forbes, Condé Nast Traveler and USA Today Travel. In addition to the diverse array of artisans and vendors, the market features St. Nicholas, glassblowing demonstrations, live holiday music and authentic German favorites like wursts, strudel and lebkuchen, drawing people from near and far to Bethlehem. In 2017, the market welcomed guests from 25 states, with people coming from as far away as Alabama, Colorado and Texas.

“The Christmas City has a well-deserved reputation as being one of the premier destinations in the nation to visit during the holiday season, and Christkindlmarkt is definitely one of the anchors of the Christmas experience,” says Bethlehem Mayor Bob Donchez. “I’ve heard from a number of merchants that the holiday season has been a strong one and it’s definitely exciting to see so many people eating, shopping and enjoying the attractions in the Historic Moravian District and the SouthSide Arts District. While many people discover Bethlehem for the first time during the holidays, they often end up returning to the city throughout the year. That has a huge impact on our businesses, tourism and our economy.”

Dates for Christkindlmarkt 2018 are Nov. 16-18 and 23-25; Nov. 29-Dec. 2; and Dec. 6-9, 13-16 and 20-23. For more information, visit www.christmascity.org.

Keigwin + Company’s PLACES PLEASE! Highlights the 7th annual DANCE NOW Holiday Celebration at SteelStacks

17131_keigwinandco_529-1-1

Featuring Contemporary Dance Artists, Nicole Wolcott and Larry Keigwin along with Students of the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts

Celebrate the season with Places Please! – a modern day version of a Chorus Line, as DANCE NOW SteelStacks, a partnership between DANCENOW and ArtsQuest, presents its 7th annual holiday show Friday, Dec. 15, 8 p.m., in the Musikfest Café of the ArtsQuest Center, 101 Founders Way, Bethlehem.

A DANCE NOW Commission for Joe’s Pub at The Public in New York City, PLACES PLEASE! reunites the choreographic collaborative team of Nicole Wolcott and Larry Keigwin of KEIGWIN + COMPANY in a full evening duet. PLACES PLEASE! is a zany trip with Keigwin and Wolcott during the final moments before the curtain goes up. The audience witnesses the anxiety and playfulness of life behind the scenes as if observing from backstage. The new work celebrates and extends the creative relationship that served as KEIGWIN + COMPANY’s foundation during its burgeoning years. Presented as dreamscape and sonic collage, the evening explores the parallel and intersecting paths of the creative process, relationship and aging of two very dynamic and vibrant artists. Students from the Lehigh Valley Charter School for the Arts will be featured in PLACES PLEASE!, created specifically for them by Wolcott and Keigwin this fall.

“Addressing the audience in an open and honest monologue, Wolcott expressed her fears about aging in front of the dance community: what happens when a dancer gets older? What becomes of the mind, body, and spirit when no one tells you it’s time to stop?”
Broadway Dance

“The anxious “Chorus Line” song about ‘getting that part’ opens the door to reflection and remembrance, as Keigwin recalls the pressure and opportunity Broadway presented, the money it meant for the first Keigwin/Wolcott show and the lasting disappointment of not becoming a Lloyd-Weber cat.” Off.Off.Off.com

About DANCE NOW

DANCE NOW is produced by directors Robin Staff, Sydney Skybetter, and Tamara Greenfield. For 22 years DANCE NOW has bent the rules to offer all-inclusive destination events that reveal the bustling energy and innovation of New York City dance makers. Created in 1995 as a program of the Downtown Arts Festival, DANCE NOW launched in 1996 as an independent festival. Without a performance venue, DANCE NOW learned to embrace limitation as a powerful source for creativity. Seeking creative ways to bring dance and community together, DANCE NOW developed partnerships to connect new audiences to innovative dance makers. Presenting dance in venues both traditional and not, DANCE NOW designed all-inclusive destination events for drained swimming pools, firehouses, galleries, and Joe’s Pub, where, in 2003 DANCE NOW introduced the Dancemopolitan series. In 2005, DANCE NOW furthered its “less is more” mantra, creating a “challenge initiative” to encourage work marked by brevity, clarity, and effect. This inspired the commissioning of full-evening works specifically for the Pub, and the merging of all DANCE NOW programs to the Pub in 2011. DANCE NOW’s programming at Joe’s Pub has defied the standard and encouraged artists to think outside the box and utilize the unique space, creating an inspiring new platform for dance.

In the last decade, DANCE NOW has produced numerous critically acclaimed works at Joe’s Pub including Doug Elkins’ Fräulein Maria, David Parker’s ShowDown, Misters and Sisters, and Head Over Heels, Nicholas Leichter’s The Whiz and 20/20, Kyle Abraham’s Heartbreaks and Homies, Nicole Wolcott and Vanessa Walters’ Alley of the Dolls, Camille Brown’s One Second Past the Future, Monica Bill Barnes’ Snow Globes, Takehiro Ueyama’s Somewhere Familiar Melodies, Claire Porter’s Sent-ence, Mark Dendy’s NEWYORKnewyork@Astor Place and, most recently, Ellis Wood’s The Juggler of Our Ladies. From a small festival series to four distinct programs, from NYC to Pennsylvania, DANCE NOW presents young innovators and emerging and maturing artists side by side, building relationships at varying stages of development and providing comprehensive assistance to advance creativity and new career paths. DANCE NOW Joe’s Pub challenges artists to investigate new directions. DANCE NOW Raw funnels new artists into its programs. DANCE NOW Silo and DANCE NOW SteelStacks provide paid teaching, residencies, and commissioning and performing opportunities through partnerships with DeSales University, Muhlenberg College, Lehigh Valley Charter School, and ArtsQuest at SteelStacks in Bethlehem, PA. DANCE NOW is supported, in part, with funds from the Barbara Bell Cumming Foundation, Jerome Robbins Foundation, Harkness Foundation for Dance, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, Mertz Gilmore Foundation, and the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
