ARTSQUEST PARTNERS WITH TOUCHSTONE THEATRE FOR OUTDOOR COMEDY SHOWS

2018-c-kj-huylebroeck-memorial5-26-2018-8307

Macungie’s Adam Yenser, Bethlehem’s Kate Hughes among headliners

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — ArtsQuest has teamed up with another mainstay of the SouthSide Bethlehem arts district, Touchstone Theatre, to present three comedy shows in the months of June and July 2021. Each show will be presented on Touchstone’s new outdoor stage, which sits behind the theatre’s longtime home at 321 E 4th St, and will have a capacity of 250 seats sold as general admission. Alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase for those 21 and over. Tickets for each show are currently on sale at steelstacks.org/comedy.

“We’re grateful to Touchstone for offering us this opportunity,” said Ryan Hill, ArtsQuest’s Programming Director and Director of the ArtsQuest Comedy Program. “We were looking for a space to safely produce comedy this summer, and Touchstone came through via the strong bond we’ve developed with them over the years. Touchstone and ArtsQuest share a commitment to enriching the lives of the people in our SouthSide neighborhoods and beyond. I’m happy that we get this opportunity to do so together.”

The series kicks off with standup comic Ramon Rivas II, as part of our ¡Sabor! Latin Festival, on June 25 at 8 p.m. (rain date June 26), with tickets available at $17 for ArtsQuest Members, $18 for students and seniors and $19 for the public. Rivas has self-distributed two comedy albums, “Revisted” and “Stick to Comedy,” with portions of both heard on SIRIUS/XM comedy stations Kevin Hart’s LOL Network, Rawdag, Laughs USA and Jeff & Larry’s Comedy Roundup. His work is also viewable on Paramount+, HBO Max, Netflix and Amazon Prime. He was selected as a ‘Comic to Watch’ by Comedy Central in 2015.

Macungie native Adam Yenser headlines the July 10 show, also at 8 p.m. and with tickets available at $17 for ArtsQuest Members, $18 for students and seniors, and $19 for the public. Yenser, an Emmy award-winning writer for The Ellen DeGeneres Show, is also the star of the recurring “Kevin the Cashier” segments. He’s appeared on Conan, FOX Laughs, and the Greg Gutfeld Show, in addition to writing for the Oscars and contributing to Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update.

July 17 will mark the return of Bethlehem native Kate Hughes’ one-woman show Most Flammable, performed as standup and storytelling both live and onscreen. The two previous editions of this show are among the most successful ever produced within the ArtsQuest Comedy Program; the new version, Most Flammable III: Amsterdammmmnnnn, details an overseas trip she took in the aftermath of a very tough year – an overseas trip that coincided with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Tickets are available for $23.50 to ArtsQuest Members, $24 for students and seniors, and $26 for the public. The rain date is July 18.

“We are excited to partner with ArtsQuest on these upcoming shows,” said James P. Jordan, Touchstone’s Artistic Director. “Our organization’s missions of our serving our community in the SouthSide and beyond align perfectly. We are proud to offer a much-needed reprieve and give people the opportunity to enjoy artistic expression through comedy together, in-person once again.”

The ArtsQuest Comedy Program started with the opening of the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks in May of 2011. Overseen by Hill, along with Coordinator Addyson Young, Specialist Anthony DeSanctis and a volunteer committee made up of twelve performers, fans and arts administrators, the ArtsQuest Comedy Program is the home of the Lehigh Valley’s only year-round comedy curriculum, which will start back up in the early fall of 2021.

ARTSQUEST TO RECEIVE $20,000 GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS

ArtsQuestCenter

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – ArtsQuest has been approved for a $20,000 Grants for Arts Projects award to support The SteelStacks Jazz Series. This project will support SteelStacks jazz performances with education and outreach activities. ArtsQuest’s project is among the more than 1,100 projects across America totaling nearly $27 million that were selected during this second round of Grants for Arts Projects fiscal year 2021 funding.

“As the country and the arts sector begin to imagine returning to a post-pandemic world, the National Endowment for the Arts is proud to announce funding that will help arts organizations such as ArtsQuest reengage fully with partners and audiences,” said NEA Acting Chairman Ann Eilers. “Although the arts have sustained many during the pandemic, the chance to gather with one another and share arts experiences is its own necessity and pleasure.”

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to offer these impactful programs for our community with NEA’s generous support,” said ArtsQuest Chief Programming Officer Patrick Brogan. “Especially during these difficult times, this support helps to make it all possible.”

The SteelStacks Jazz Series aims to lower barriers to involvement in the arts for at-risk students in the Bethlehem and Allentown School Districts, while also making jazz an easily accessible and enjoyable experience for members of the community. The SteelStacks Jazz Series events will take place in the ArtsQuest Center’s Musikfest Café, the Fowler Blast Furnace Room, Levitt Pavilion SteelStacks and within the classrooms of our educational partners in the Bethlehem Area School District and the Allentown City School District.

This series features free programming, performances, workshops and outreach activities for the local Southside Bethlehem community and the entire Lehigh Valley region. Both free and ticketed performances by award-winning jazz musicians are offered on ArtsQuest’s campus. Educational workshops are held for local middle and high school students and educators. Students also compete in the annual High School Jazz Band Showcase for the chance to open for a SteelStacks Jazz Series headliner.

ARTSQUEST TO HOST ‘TIME TO REMEMBER’ MEMORIAL DAY CELEBRATION AT LEVITT PAVILION STEELSTACKS

our-hometown-heroes1

Ceremony to take place on May 31, in-person and via livestream

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In honor of our nation’s bravest heroes, ArtsQuest and Embassy Bank will host the “Time to Remember” Memorial Day Celebration on Mon., May 31 at 3 p.m., on the Levitt Pavilion SteelStacks stage, presented by Coordinated Health, now part of Lehigh Valley Health Network. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. and free reservations can be made at steelstacks.org.

The “Time to Remember” Memorial Day Celebration will feature Kendal Conrad singing the National Anthem and God Bless America, Chris Poczak playing Taps on trumpet, and a reading by the Lehigh Valley Gold Star Mothers of the names of Lehigh Valley residents who have lost their lives in service to our nation. Speakers will include ArtsQuest President & CEO Kassie Hilgert and City of Bethlehem Council Member J. William Reynolds.

“ArtsQuest is honored to feature an array of programming throughout the year dedicated to commemorating the noble actions of our fallen heroes, including this ‘Time to Remember’ Memorial Day Celebration,” said ArtsQuest President & CEO Kassie Hilgert. “We thank Embassy Bank who continues to make it possible for us to honor those who’ve given it all for our nation. Please join us for this intimate celebration of bravery and freedom.”

Visitors can also view the 11th annual ‘Our Home Town Heroes’ display, presented by ArtsQuest and Embassy Bank, which honors those within our community who are either currently serving or who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. More than 140 banners, featuring over 1400 Lehigh Valley residents, will go on display starting Memorial Day Weekend, May 29-31, and will stay up through July 4th.

Over the past 10 years, local servicemen and women from all branches of the military have been on display to honor our hometown heroes. Each banner displays not only photos and names, but the soldier’s rank, branch, dates of service and hometown.

“While Memorial Day kicks off the summer season for most of us – full of picnics, festivals and of course ceremonies – it is also a day of remembrance, dedicated to honoring our servicemen and women who gave themselves selflessly for our freedom,” said Embassy Bank President, Chief Executive Officer & Chairman Dave Lobach.

“After some of the most trying times our nation has experienced in recent history, I am so glad we can get together once again for the powerful tradition of honoring our military, especially those who have lost their lives protecting and serving the United States of America.”

If you’d prefer to enjoy the “Time to Remember” Memorial Day Celebration from your own home, watch the livestream on our SteelStacks Facebook page.

5 Videos That Prove Tommy Emmanuel is a Certified Guitar Player

By Jake Cohen, ArtsQuest Marketing Intern

Tommy Emmanuel is rocking outdoors at the Steel Stacks presented by T-Mobile on May 20, and there are tons of reasons to see him do what he does best.

For one, he’s an Aussie! Born in 1955 in Australia, Emmanuel first became interested in music at the age of four when his engineer father brought home an electric guitar to see how it worked.

Second, his music is guaranteed to make you happy! When fans speak of his music, there are two main qualities that they mention. Other than the fact that his guitar playing is predictably extraordinary, fans always speak about the joy that his Emmanuel’s music brings them. Not quite sure what we mean? Well check out some of these clips of Tommy Emmanuel bringing joy to the world – and making it look easy!

Get Your Lawn Square or Table

“Classical Gas”

I hope your browser can watch this one at .25x speed, because Emmanuel almost breaks the sounds barrier with this one! It’s amazing how many notes he can squeeze into each second – they don’t teach you THAT in music class! “Classical Gas?” No, Tommy is running on butane!

“Keep It Simple”

“Keep It Simple.” Even the concept is heartwarming. Not only does Emmanuel plays this piece masterfully, but he also looks so passionate about the song. You can see how he plucks each chord not only with his fingers, but with his entire body, heart and soul.  I feel like I could listen to this one on repeat until his show next month, but we have more clips to look at.

Song For A Rainy Day

Is there ever a more appropriate time for a certified guitarist to bring you joy than on a rainy day? Each chord here feels so purposeful and meaningful, and that just goes to show how great Emmanuel is. Rain, rain, go away, Tommy has more songs to play!

Cover of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”

Yes, you’ve heard “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” before, but never quite like this! Showcasing what a lifetime dedication to an instrument looks like, Emmanuel crushes this classic with his own unique rendition.

“Beatles Medley”

That’s right – Emmanuel is even amazing live! His stage presence is so overpowering and he truly looks like he’s in his element. Watch as he treats his guitar like an extension of his body and has the whole crows involved in this performance. He certainly does the Beatles justice in this medley.

Well there you have it – just five of many examples of Tommy Emmanuel absolutely shredding the strings! He’ll be here on May 20 for a show that you won’t want to miss.

By Kellie & Breece of Pepperwine & ArtsQuest Staff | Published 3/19/21

Congrats, you’ve found your way to the ArtsQuest Discovery Series! Our organization prides itself on introducing your ears to new bands and artists. So while the music touring industry is mostly on hold because of the pandemic, we’re giving some of our musician friends the chance to share what music they’re hyped about. A mix of up-and-comers, artists that inspire their craft, deep cuts, the classics…oh, and their own tunes!

In this edition, get to know the musical tastes of Pepperwine! The Musikfest veterans use voice, piano, synthesizer, guitar, bass, and percussion to create hip shaking-rhythms and head-nodding tunes. Their catalog of music effortlessly blends elements of soul, pop, R&B, funk, and rock with Leading Lady Kellie offering a powerful yet sultry vocal.

“Try” is an uplifting electric feel-good song with chill undertones featuring vocals, piano, synth, guitar, bass, and drums. The theme of this song is “just trying to get by – keeping our souls up high”… one day at a time. This song was released on March 1, 2021.

Yebba

Yebba has power in her voice but it is also extremely smooth. Her songwriting is unique and different. She also has an ability to move about her range in a way that is very beautiful and skillful. Her song “Evergreen” caught me the first time I heard it.

Electric Kif

We have played with Electric Kif a few times in Asbury Park, NJ and they are ridiculously good at their craft and very nice guys. Their music varies and can be upbeat but also super powerful and dramatic.

Camille Trust

I first found Camille Trust through a cover she was doing of another vocalist’s song. Her music and style varies but one thing is consistent is and that is her beautiful and strong voice. She has also done some hilarious/thoughtfully planned live streams throughout our quarantine time. She is a new age pop soul star.

Dynamo

One time at a gig in NYC we were put on a bill with Dynamo. We were blown away by them and how many members they could fit on the tiny stage provided. It’s hard to pick a favorite song but something about “Something’s Gotta Give” is so good.

Cory Wong

Cory Wong deserves to be on our list simply for the sheer amount of fantastic musical content he has released since 2020 (not to mention the equally amazing music before). “Lilypad” is one of those newer songs, appearing on The Striped Album from 2020.

Jungle

Really enjoy these guys’ vibe and airy vocal flow. Jungle has several singers but somehow still sound like one voice. Their beats are uplifting and dancey and their music is good for many occasions… driving, working out, dancing, cooking whatever!

Octave Cat

Octave Cat is comprised of members of Lotus and Dopapod. They are instrumental electric synthy goodness. Their song “Metropolis” has so much energy and a gradual dynamic build that I’ve found myself punching the air by the time the song is over! I particularly enjoy this live version…

Hambone Relay

We couldn’t not include our friends in Hambone Relay! We met these guys about three years ago when we played Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg. They played before us and my jaw was on the floor. Since we have created a friendship and done some collaborations. Their instrumental discography is funky and so good. They are incredible musicians and really nice guys. Here is their song “Star Climber”…

Rett Madison

I discovered Rett Madison when she did a cover with the Scary Pockets, and then discovered her discography. She has an eclectic mix of music but there’s something about “Fleas” I especially love the build and vocal melody. Also, the irony of lyrics is great too.

Huntertones

I recently found Huntertones on a Spotify playlist. They were doing a cover with a vocalist. I thought “that instrumentation is really cool” and that led to my finding the song “Togo”…

Lemon City Trio

Lemon City Trio is an amazing instrumental trio. Their sound varies and they have a track for every mood. They recently put out some new music and one of the songs I enjoy most is “New Moon”. It is really relaxing and has multiple sections that cohesively flow really nicely.

Madwoman

Madwoman is a band out of Florida. I discovered them through the “original music” hashtag on instagram. Their music isn’t the easiest to find online but they post very frequently on Instagram. They are a bluesy soulful trio and the singer has a beautiful and interesting voice. I particularly like the clip of this song.

ARTSQUEST’S GREATER LEHIGH VALLEY FILMMAKER FESTIVAL SET FOR 10TH EDITION WITH ADJUSTED FORMAT

GLVFF 10th Annual_2021

Online-only events highlighted by talk with actor/director Daniel Roebuck

BETHLEHEM, PA – After ten years of highlighting submitted films from the region’s moviemakers, ArtsQuest’s Greater Lehigh Valley Filmmaker Festival (GLVFF) is back for 2021 – specifically Mar. 31-Apr. 3 – with an adjusted online-only format set to celebrate some of the best films of the decade while also discussing the future of filmmaking. All GLVFF events are free of charge and will be produced via Zoom while simulcast on Facebook Live via the Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas page; interested patrons can either register to be a part of an event’s Zoom call or watch via Facebook.

dannys-headshot-1-1 On Saturday, Apr. 3 at 1 p.m. actor/director Daniel Roebuck, a Bethlehem native, will sit down with GLVFF Director (and ArtsQuest Cinema Specialist) Anthony DeSanctis to discuss his career in movies, including his plan to make the Lehigh Valley a hub for filmmaking in the future. Roebuck, who made his directorial debut with the Lehigh Valley-shot “Getting Grace,” has just under 250 acting credits to his name in a career that has spanned five decades.

Later that same day – 3 p.m. on Apr. 3 – Emmaus native Stephanie Gardner will discuss her project “33 and Me,” an international television series wherein Gardner travels to different countries to engage with film directors who are also in their thirties, exploring their lives, careers and cultures. Gardner, now based in Taos, N.M., has written, directed and produced over twenty short films, including the 2015 GLVFF Best in Show winner “If I Had a Piano (I’d Play You the Blues).”

Other GLVFF 2021 events include Reel Winners, a two-part series of compilation reels featuring GLVFF winning projects from the last decade, followed by Q&A sessions with the filmmakers; panel discussions on documentary filmmaking and budgeting for independent films; a presentation of documentaries filmed by Kutztown University students during the first full semester of the COVID-19 pandemic; and Reel Memories, an interactive discussion all about the passion of the cinema-going experience.

“We couldn’t ignore the fact that this year the GLVFF turns ten, so we wanted to do something special for the occasion,” said DeSanctis. “Panels and discussions are ideas we’ve toyed with for a few years now, so I’m very excited to introduce these new formats to the festival and will look into how we can keep them in for future editions. We are all hoping next year’s festival will be in-person and that we’ll be again accepting new submissions to exhibit in our theater as we know how much it means to filmmakers to see their work projected onto our big screen.”
