Judy Gold Talks Comedy, Jewish Holidays and More

By Ben Youngerman, ArtsQuest Marketing Manager

Since the early ’90s, comedian Judy Gold has been paving a unique path to a golden comedy career. The two-time Emmy Award winner has found success in standup, television and theater, but has faced the stigma of coming out as a gay parent during her career.

Before we welcome back Gold to SteelStacks Oct. 21, ArtsQuest spoke to the hilarious comic about her career, her take on current events and her favorite Jewish holidays!

Buy Tickets

ArtsQuest: We know you’re always busy with a billion projects. What are you up to now?

Judy Gold: Well, I have just recorded an album so now I have the daunting task of having to listen to my annoying voice. We did two shows and I think we are going to put out two albums maybe six months apart. So I have to go through all the material and pick what I’m using. You know how like you can’t stand the sound of your own voice? Take that and multiply it by five million, okay? That’s what I have to do.

AQ: Is it kind of like Johnny Depp has never seen any of the movies he performs in?

JG: I can’t look at myself. That’s how my kids torture me. They go on the computer and they look at videos and stuff just to torture me. If you’re a performer, you’re hypercritical of yourself. I don’t know how people [can] look at themselves. I have friends who are like, “I’m gonna be on this, let’s all come over and look!”

AQ: You work in all different types of media: you’re a standup comedian, you’re on TV, you write, you do theater, you host a podcast. What’s it like being able to flex your creative muscles in those ways?

JG: I think part of me feels lucky that there are so many outlets like that. I get to do my podcasts and I love the theater, I love doing TV and I love writing. But, I’m a standup first and foremost. So, If I think of life without standup I don’t know what I’d do. Just to be able to get on stage and especially in the climate that we’re living in now – it feels very cathartic.

AQ: Mentioning these tenser times, is comedy more important now? Or is that kind of an overstatement?

JG: Oh no! I think the fact that freedom of speech is being threatened and that the truth is being altered, it’s more important now than ever. It’s interesting because comics are now being vilified and being held to sort of a higher standard than these politicians that say whatever they feel like, you know? Then they spin it and it’s like the truth tellers are the ones who are taking a lot of crap and it’s ridiculous! It’s just so funny that they will defend [the president].

Freedom of speech is what makes this country great. We can criticize and we have outlets for opinions. And honestly the theater changes people’s lives, music changes people’s lives, art changes people’s lives. You know, it all tells stories from different perspectives and you can’t shut that down. That’s what makes America great. Because it was great before. It was great and now it’s not great because of him. It’s really just interesting because I feel like comedians are held to a higher standard and even jokes from 10 years ago are being resurrected just to look at this or look at that. His is locker room talk, yet ours is not? I don’t understand.

AQ: In your weekly podcast Kill Me Now, you interview celebrities about what makes them angry. What do you enjoy about hosting a podcast? Obviously, we know what makes you angry in the political world, but what else makes you angry?

JG: Oh my god, well I love hosting a podcast, I love my guests, I love doing research. I’m very curious about people and what makes them tick, but I’m curious when I think about things that they don’t normally talk about. The majority are comics and comics speak to one another differently than they speak to non-comics. So, I think it’s really a window inside of the mind of comedians and why we are the way we are and why we think the way we think.

What ****es me off? I think basic incompetence and….people who are dumb…just pay attention!

AQ: Comedy seems to be more welcoming to newer and different points of view. So you, as a woman who is also in the LGBTQ and Jewish communities, how have you seen this evolve since you started as a comedian?

JG: Thank God for the Jews because they love comedy, they love theater, they love the arts. So, it’s so great to be a part of that community – they love true entertainment. They just are a really supportive community. And then as far as LGBTQRSTUVWXYZ stuff is concerned I think it’s great that when I came out in the mid ‘90s – when I came out on stage – I came out basically as a gay parent. It was not easy. It definitely had an effect on my career. In fact, I didn’t come out prior to that because I didn’t have a lot of material about being gay. But, also it was an excuse to pigeon hole you that you were a gay comedian. All I ever wanted to be was a comedian. I happen to be gay. I am Jewish, you know, that’s so much of who I am. It’s pretty much all of who I am.

I think it’s really great now that being a part of the LGBT group is not a big deal – that’s where we want it to be. When I came out as a gay parent the material I was doing was about my kids and the fact that they had two moms. Everyone has a family or some kind of a family whether it’s biological or non-biological. We all have, hopefully, a group of people we consider our family. So I think talking about being a parent and also being gay, people realized, “Oh my god, their family’s just like mine.” There’s a lot you can do with a joke and a microphone.

AQ: What are your favorite and least favorite Jewish holidays and why?

JG: Okay, this is good. Um, the first two days of Passover are up there as my favorite. The last six days I could do without, for obvious reasons.

AQ: You miss bread at some point, right?

JG: Yeah, I miss bowel movements, bread…I love Rosh Hashana. Yom Kippur, I get really into it and then about 2-3 o’clock in the afternoon I’m just like, “alright.” I have often been stopped in the airport by security for having menorah in my suitcase, because I’ve lit Hanukkah candles in many hotels. What am I missing? There’s like a hundred of them.

AQ: There’s like three every day…

JG: Yeah. I enjoy Sukkot. Purim makes me think about winning a Goldfish at the Purim carnival and then having it die and flushing it down the toilet while I sing Mourner’s Kaddish.

AQ: Thanks, Judy. We’re so excited to welcome you back on Oct. 21!

JG: I’m excited! I had such a good time there so I’m excited to come back. Great audience and, you know what, we need to laugh. Every day you wake up like, “Oh my god, what now?” so [it’s nice] just to be able to forget for an hour.

Airport’s Support Helps Nonprofit ArtsQuest Expand Programming at Festival, Set for Oct. 5-7 and 12-14

BETHLEHEM, PA—When Oktoberfest at SteelStacks returns next month for its eighth fun-filled year, patrons will find more Oktober-festivities than ever before thanks in large part to the support of Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE), the new presenting sponsor of the annual event.

One of ArtsQuest’s largest and most popular festivals outside of Musikfest, Oktoberfest set a record attendance of 29,500 in 2017, with the event’s crowds growing steadily since 2015. This year’s Oktoberfest presented by Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE), set for Oct. 5-7 and 12-14, will feature several new attractions and family activities, as the festival adds bratwurst eating contests, a Wiener Dog Parade Oct. 6, fire dance cabaret Oct. 13 and more. Complete details on the festival will be announced in the coming weeks.

“Lehigh Valley International Airport has developed a strong partnership with ArtsQuest in recent years through support of popular events such as Christkindlmarkt and Musikfest. We both share a vision of promoting the Lehigh Valley as the community of choice for people and an exciting place to call ‘home.’ This year, the Airport is extremely proud to expand our outreach efforts by sponsoring Oktoberfest, a fun-filled festival packed with entertainment that is free for the community,” says Thomas R. Stoudt, Executive Director, Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority.

Oktoberfest presented by Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) is a free festival that features authentic German food and beer, live music, schuhplattlers and kids’ activities, as well as attractions like the Beer-Lympics competition, popular dachshund races, Oktoberfest 5k and more. Festival hours are Fridays, 5-10 p.m.; Saturdays, noon-10 p.m.; and Sundays, noon-8 p.m.

“Over the past three years, we’ve really focused on making Oktoberfest accessible to as many people as possible, expanding our programming for all ages by incorporating dog agility demonstrations, doubling the number of dachshund races and adding in new programming like the Hasselhoff-off, stein hoisting championships and the Oktoberfest Biergartens,” says ArtsQuest Chief Operating Officer Curt Mosel. “Thanks to the support of Lehigh Valley International Airport, we are not only able to keep this festival free for attendees, we’ll be expanding our programming, helping to draw even more guests in and around the Valley. We thank Lehigh Valley International Airport for its investment in our arts and cultural programming, which ultimately benefits our entire region.”

Ceremony Honoring First Responders Highlights Patriot Day Activities at SteelStacks Sept. 11

Underwater Rescue and Recovery Squad Volunteer Jonelle Heany to be honored with 2018 ArtsQuest First Responder Valor Award

BETHLEHEM, PA—The public is invited to join ArtsQuest in honoring our region’s first responders, law enforcement, firefighters and emergency medical personnel during Patriot Day presented by Embassy Bank Sept. 11, 6-8 p.m., at SteelStacks.

This year marks the 17th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people at the World Trade Center in New York City and Pentagon outside Washington, D.C., as well as the crew and passengers aboard Flight 93, which crashed in a western Pennsylvania field. As we remember those lost on that day, SteelStacks will also honor the men and women who stepped up to help amid the devastation, as well as those individuals who continue to put themselves in harm’s way in our communities every day.

At 6 p.m., at the ArtsQuest Center, ArtsQuest will honor area first responders with a special ceremony that includes the presentation of the 2018 ArtsQuest First Responder Valor Award to Douglassville resident Jonelle Heany. A scuba diver since 1987, Heany volunteered with Reading’s Underwater Rescue and Recovery Squad from 2000-’16 and now volunteers for the Keystone Water Rescue out of Boyertown. She also served as a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary from 2005-’17 and has volunteered with ArtsQuest and Musikfest for 13 years. In recognition of her efforts and dedication to her community, ArtsQuest President and CEO Kassie Hilgert and Bethlehem Mayor Bob Donchez will present Heany with a glass sculpture hand-blown by the artists at the ArtsQuest Glass Studio at the Banana Factory.

“I love the water, and I love helping people,” Heany says of her volunteer work. “It’s an honor to be recognized on Patriot Day. The celebration is a great way to recognize and honor those who volunteer or work in the field of emergency response. By coming together on this day, we prove that no matter how badly someone tries to destroy and weaken our spirit, they fail. We are a country of the most determined and loving people in the world, and we come together to help our fellow man when needed!”

Other activities during the ceremony include the singing of the National Anthem by Alexis Connelly of Freedom High School and a color guard presentation. Following the event, attendees can enjoy live music by Vin Mott’s Rhythm & Blues Band on the Highmark Health Community Stage at 6:30 p.m.

Additionally, all first responders in attendance will receive a 20-percent discount on food and non-alcoholic beverages at the Mike & Ike Bistro in the ArtsQuest Center from 5-9 p.m.; identification must be provided to receive the discount.

For more information on Patriot Day presented by Embassy Bank, visit www.steelstacks.org.

The SteelStacks Fun Un-Run

In Lehigh Valley’s first .1K running is not allowed, and participants can buy first place

BETHLEHEM, PA—On your mark! Get set! No running! Join ArtsQuest as it hosts the inaugural SteelStacks Fun Un-Run Sept. 8, 5-7 p.m. For those who hate running, but love drinking in athletic wear, the Un-Run is a .1K race that takes participants on a 100-yard course from the Air Products Town Square to the corner of First Street and Founders Way. Registration is limited to 100 people who are looking to do something objectively silly.

The event, supported by Media Partner 100.7 WLEV, features a pre-game party with live music by rock bang Zaire, food specials, guided pre-race “stretching,” course marshals and a “hydration station” just like a real race but without any of the pretense or frills of an actual athletic event.

Registration is $15 and includes one Yuengling beer at the completion of the race and one official SteelStacks Fun Un-Run sticker. Want to take home the gold? For $100, the Fun Un-Run’s “You Can Pay Us to Win a Trophy” level registration includes one trophy commemorating triumphant “victory.”

Following the race and race after party at 7:30 p.m., participants are invited to attend the free Start Making Sense: Talking Heads Tribute concert at the Levitt Pavilion SteelStacks, presented by Coordinated Health.

Proceeds from the SteelStacks Fun Un-Run support ArtsQuest’s art and education programs for area students. For registration and more information, visit www.steelstacks.org.

Lehigh Valley Grand Prix and Partners Support Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley

pcflv2-1

As a local nonprofit dedicated to supporting families impacted by childhood cancer, the Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley (PCFLV) provides an array of unique, free programming geared toward supporting patients and their families during treatment, survivorship and bereavement.

Since 2017, the SteelStacks Grand Prix and its sponsors have been proud partners with the Bethlehem-based nonprofit, contributing to the foundation to help it fulfill its mission in the community.

Following the second-annual SteelStacks Grand Prix, event sponsors Barry Bartakovits, Jim Stocklas and Anna Athanasiou, along with the Lehigh Valley Grand Prix and ArtsQuest staff, made a visit to PCFLV offices at the Banana Factory. On July 19, a $7,000 check was presented to PCFLV Executive Director Michelle Zenie to support the foundation’s programs and services.

“PCFLV is so thankful for this generous donation from ArtsQuest, Lehigh Valley Grand Prix, Barry, Jim and Anna,” says Zenie. “We have seen a huge increase in the number of pediatric cancer diagnosis here in the Lehigh Valley this year, and these funds will help us to provide much-needed support to our 275 local PCFLV families.”

Founded in 2003, the PCFLV host events and get-togethers for families to participate in fun and engaging activities free of charge, creating a place for parents and kids to find nurturing support within the pediatric cancer community.

“More than 15,000 children each year are diagnosed with cancer,” says Bartakovits. “The work of the Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley is invaluable, providing support and assistance to children and families battling this disease, so we are proud to support this local nonprofit trying to make a huge difference in our region.”

PCFLV also offers ongoing support programming, like Kids Konnect and Camp Smile. In addition, it makes visits to the inpatient pediatric floor at Lehigh Valley Health Network, armed with arts & crafts, gifts, entertainment and food, all in an effort to distract children during their treatment.

“The Pediatric Cancer Foundation offers impactful and much-needed programs for area families who are facing some very difficult and challenging circumstances to say the least,” says ArtsQuest Chief Operating Officer Curt Mosel. “The SteelStacks Grand Prix and its partners are committed to helping this nonprofit expand its reach in our community, and we hope that these funds make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families throughout the region.”
